AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION OF PRISONERS. [21st March, 1956.] |
BE IT ENACTED BY THE OIREACHTAS AS FOLLOWS:— | ||

Lock-ups. |
1. —A prisoner may be detained temporarily in a lock-up provided in a Garda Síochána station or in any other place, being a place designated for the purpose by the Minister for Justice,— |
[GA] | (a) while in transit from a prison to a court for trial or on adjournment or remand; | |
[GA] | (b) while a case in which he is involved is at hearing; | |
[GA] | (c) for a period of not more than forty-eight hours while awaiting removal to a prison on conviction or remand. | |

Repeal. |
2. —Section 23 of the General Prisons (Ireland) Act, 1877, is hereby repealed. |

Short title, collective citation and construction. |
3. —(1) This Act may be cited as the Prisons Act, 1956. |
[GA] | (2) The Prisons (Ireland) Acts, 1826 to 1933, and this Act may be cited together as the Prisons Acts, 1826 to 1956, and shall be construed as one. |
